By the time of their second and final LP, WE'RE NOT IN THIS ALONE, New York's Youth of Today had muscled themselves into position as one of hardcore's most formidable acts. Previous recordings like BREAK DOWN THE WALLS showcased their righteous fury and frenzied performances, but their skill as musicians was still developing. The songs on ALONE are more focused than anything else the band had done to this point, and scene anthems like the pro-vegetarian "No More" sear with singer Ray Cappo's passionate delivery. The more melodic direction of his next project, Shelter, was foreshadowed, but this is pure Youth of Today.

Youth of Today's debut full-length, Break Down the Walls, sounds like standard New York hardcore, but the enormous influence that this disc had on the straight-edge movement is almost immeasurable. Each song is a fast-paced punk slugfest, geared toward the group's angry young male fan base. The performances are sloppy but fierce, and the message is a predictable anti-establishment rant. Positivity, clean living, and the benefits of a fully vented spleen are stressed to a raw extreme, thus establishing a hardcore blueprint for the many artists who followed Youth of Today's example. Highlights include live favorites like "Make a Change" and "Stabbed In the Back." Ray Cappo maintains his vocal intensity throughout all 13 tracks (coming in at around 20 minutes), and the band follows suit with passionate performances. A must-own for straight-edge enthusiasts and New York hardcore scholars, Break Down the Walls is generally considered one of its genres all-time greats.-Vincent Jeffries, AMG

New York City's hardcore scene in the early-'80s was a dangerous, drug-infested one. Leading lights like Agnostic Front and Cro-Mags were wild and powerful, but lacked the positive outlook of the Washington D.C. Dischord Records scene or that of Reno's Seven Seconds. This 1985 EP, originally released on Seven Seconds's Positive Force Records, was a potent opening shot from Connecticut transplant Ray Cappo's dynamic Youth of Today. The music tempers the metallic ferocity of New York hardcore with speed and subtle melodicism, and the moral outrage of songs like "Take a Stand" and "Can't Close My Eyes" is impossible to ignore.
